Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment

In 2011, Nevada's trucking industry afforded 45,480 jobs or one out of 21 in the state. Total Nevada's trucking industry wages paid in 2011 exceeded $2 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $44,077. In May 20111, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States stated that truck drivers, heavy, tractor-trailer and light delivery drivers, held 15,430 jobs with a base annual salary of $39,975.

Small Business Emphasis

n 2012, Nevada had over 2,380 small and locally owned trucking companies served by a wide range of both large and small supporting businesses.

Essential Products Transportations

Over 80% of Nevada communities depend exclusively on trucks to move their goods. In 2010, the state transported 94% of the total manufactured tonnage or 132,817 tons per day using the trucks.

Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry

In 2009, Nevada's trucking industry paid approximately $277 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 36% of all taxes owed by Nevada motorists, despite trucks representing only 9% of vehicle miles traveled in the state.

Individual Companies

As of January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $7,322 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were over and above the standard taxes paid by Nevada's businesses.

Roadway Uses

In 2008, Nevada had 33,907 miles of public roads over which all motorists traveled 21 billion miles, and Truckers traveled 1.8 billion miles.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax assessed annually on heavy vehicles that are operated on public highways with the registered gross weights equal to 55,000 pounds or more.
